Lesson 4: Who is Jesus?

Jesus, the Great Storyteller

Have you heard any good stories lately? We all like to hear a good story. Jesus told stories called "parables" to the people of his time. He used parables because many of the things Jesus was teaching were new to the people. They had heard rabbis and Pharisees teach them, but they did not teach anything new. Telling his teachings with stories helped people understand what he was saying to them. Jesus also used parables to teach people how to treat others and live for God.

People loved to hear Jesus teach. He would say things like, "You've heard it said..." Then, he would add, "But I say..." He was speaking with great authority when he taught. He could do this because he was God. He really knew how to get the peoples' attention.

Jesus told his disciples that the people who listened to the parables and applied them to their life would see God in heaven. Others, who did not understand the parables would just be hearing a story. The parables were a key to understanding the Kingdom of God.

Bible Drill

Now is your time to look for parables in your Bible! Get your Bible ready.

What parable teaches us that God is our Father, and he cares for us very much? Look up Luke 15:11-32. What is the name of this parable?

How do we know that we should take care of each other, no matter who we are? Look up Luke 10:25-37. What is the name of this parable?

Why is it important to forgive others when they have done something wrong to you? Look up Matthew 18:21-35. What is the name of this parable?

There are many more parables that you can read about. They are not only stories that Jesus told, but have lessons that we should learn and live by. By doing this, we will make God very happy!
