Lesson 4: Fire!!!
Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are a great piece of fire fighting equipment. There are many different types of fire extinguishers. It is best if you use a multi purpose fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Fire Extinguisher Maintenance: Fire extinguishers should be serviced by a professional at least once a year. Know the location of fire extinguishers in the kitchen and what they are used for. Types of Fire Extinguishers: Water fire extinguishers should never be used on flammable liquids or an electrical fire. They can be used on paper, cloth, wood, rubber and plastics. Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers (Co2) are used on grease, oil, gasoline, paint, lacquer, solvents and other flammable liquids. Dry chemical fire extinguishers are used on electrical fires of all kinds. A multi purpose fire extinguisher is used on flammable liquids, electrical equipment, and most other combustible fires. It is this type of fire extinguisher that I suggest using in the kitchen. Many fire departments offer free training of fire extinguishers. Call your local fire department and ask if they offer such a program. The more knowledge you have of fires and fire extinguishers, the less chance you have of being injured in a fire. Be safe.
