Lesson 3: Cleaning Up
Bugs, Pets & Pests
If bugs or mice get into your kitchen, they can cause illness. Always wipe the lids of cans when you take them out of the cupboard to stop germs from contaminating the food inside. Use insect strips to control flies and other flying insects. Use traps for mice and rats. Throw away any food that comes into contact with rodents. They carry deadly germs. If you have cockroaches, ants or other pests, traps are available for each species. If that doesn't rid you of the pests, you may have to ask an adult to call in a professional pest control company. I know you love your pet, but use caution. Pets can carry germs. Keep pets out of the kitchen if possible. Keep their food dishes away from all food that is going to be eaten by people. If you place your pet's dish on the counter to fill it, be sure and wash the counter with hot soapy water and then spray with anti-bacterial spray. Always wash your hands after petting or touching your pet. Never allow pets to eat out of dishes that are used by people. Your pet should have his very own bowl. Clean pet dishes separately from those used by people. Then, clean the sink with anti-bacterial cleanser. Be very careful when using spray deodorizes or bug sprays in the kitchen. The mist from the spray can land on counters and in appliances and pots and pans that are not properly covered.
