Lesson 3: Cleaning Up

Cleaning up in the kitchen is an important aspect of cooking. If we don't take proper care, the microbes in our food can cause food poisoning and other illness. Germs can be easily spread around the kitchen. This lesson will focus on how to keep the kitchen sparkling clean.

Clean As You Go

Try to clean as you go. If you spill something, clean it up immediately.

Always wash your hands, kitchen utensils and tools immediately after handling raw meat, poultry, fish or other raw products, such as eggs.

Always wash pots, pans, utensils, cutting boards and other tools with hot soapy water. Change the water often. Rinse with hot, clean water. Drain dishes until dry.

Try to avoid using dish clothes and tea towels. They can spread germs. Instead, use a disposable cloth to wash dishes.

If you must use dish clothes and tea towels, launder after each use.

Always clean manual or electric can openers after each use. Remember to unplug electric appliances when cleaning.

Use dish detergent that is made to dissolve grease, dirt and oil. There are many types of anti-bacterial detergents available.

Use spray type anti-bacterial cleaners on counters and stoves.

Add a few drops of bleach to your dish water. This stops germs dead.

Use caution when using bleach. Ask an adult to help.

Use clean clothes and sponges for each task. This stops cross contamination.
