Lesson 2: Kitchen Hazards

Small Appliance Safety

Small kitchen appliances make our jobs in the kitchen much easier than they were a century ago. These same appliances can be a hazard in the kitchen if they aren't cared for and handled properly.

Caring for Appliances

Always check appliance cords before using. If they are broken, frayed, tied in knots, melted, or damaged in other ways, do not use them. Damaged cords can cause fires. Ask an adult to repair or replace the cords immediately.

Never immerse small appliances in water.

Store small appliances according to the manufacturers directions.

Handling Appliances

Always read the manufacturers directions before using an electrical appliance for the first time.

Never use appliances near water.

Never plug in appliances with wet hands.

Never handle appliances with damaged cords.

Never use an appliance that is not safety approved.

Always insert and remove plugs by holding the plug itself. Never pull on the cord.

Be sure that your fingers never come into contact with the metal prongs of a plug. This causes severe shock.

Never use appliances that overheat, send off sparks, or have an unusual odor while in use.

Never use a fork to dislodge bread in a toaster or a part that is stuck on a small appliance. This will cause electric shock.
