Lesson 2: Kitchen Hazards
Hot Things
There are many hazards in the kitchen that are caused by hot things. Use caution when using the stove, oven or microwave. Using and Handling Hot Things Always use oven mitts or hot pads when picking up things that are hot. Keep pot handles pointed to the back of the stove. If you accidentally bump a handle, hot liquid can splash, causing severe burns. Always use microwave safe cookware when using the microwave. It doesn't get hot like regular dishes do when used in the microwave. When frying foods, always use a splatter screen. Use caution when removing lids from steaming pots. It's a good idea to wear oven mitts. Never wear long or loose sleeves when cooking. There is always a danger of them coming in contact with hot water or grease. Always ask an adult to supervise when you are cooking with grease or oil. These are highly flammable and can catch fire easily. Never place a glass of water or other liquid where it can fall into a deep fryer. When water hits oil, there is instant steam that can send oil flying in all directions. Always keep a workable fire extinguisher in the kitchen. If you don't have one, ask an adult to buy one. Make sure it is working. If a fire extinguisher is not available, keep a container of baking soda or salt nearby when cooking. Either of these will usually smother a small grease fire. Be careful when adding food to grease or to a deep fryer. If the fat is too hot, or if there is ice or liquid present in the food, the grease or oil will splatter and can cause severe burns.
