Lesson 4: Bullying: How to Cope
Bullying is a very serious problem in today's society. When kids begin to bully, the situation can escalate (get worse) quickly. It can make you feel frightened, alone and depressed. If extreme bullying goes on for an extended (long) period of time, it can become more violent. It can cause people to seek revenge, which can lead to serious injury or even death. I don't want to scare you, but it is important to learn how to cope with bullying. So, if you are being bullied, it must stop NOW!!
Coping Tips
What Can You Do? If you can, it's best to ignore a bully. Walk right past him and go directly to a safe place. Try not to cry or get angry. The bully enjoys seeing you angry or upset. If you don't react, the bullying stops being fun for him. Often when it stops being fun, the bullying stops. How to Respond If you have to respond to the bully, give him a firm, "NO," or "That's what you think." Try to turn the bully's comment into a joke. If the bully says something like, "That's a stupid backpack," say "Thanks, I'm glad you like it." Chances are he does.
