I’ve enjoyed teaching this class and hope you’ve enjoyed some of its explorations. I hope the class has inspired you to make your own explorations with regard to movies, either in the areas we have talked about here or in other areas. Here are a few more ideas to think about:

1. Think of some of your favorite movies. Where are the Campbellesque connections that you can make with the stories and characters? Why do you think they “ring a bell” with you?

2. We find myths, symbols, and metaphors occur in many places in our lives. They occur in art, whether that art is 18th century paintings or 21st century action movies. They occur in our dreams. They occur in history, as we watch the heroes of the past and the heroes of our present rise to meet their own destinies. Lastly, they occur in our own lives. At times, our lives can seem full of metaphor and signs. Our entire lives can seem like a mythological hero’s journey. (Sometimes a trip to the grocery store can seem like a mythological hero’s journey.) Like a dream, we meet friends who tell us secret knowledge (gnosis); we instinctually do something as if nudged by an angel; and we meet our demons in the wilderness.

3. What if your life was a movie? What happened to you today that has biblical resonance? What happened today that was full of symbol and mythological significance?
