Lesson 1: The Divine Book Of Allah

Quran - Perpetual Guidance for Humanity

The message of Quran is considered to be designed for continuous existence. It addresses the entirety of the human race, regardless of an individual’s religion, caste (social status), class (economic status), or race. It is the beacon of light for everyone. It contains details for the refinement of an individual, for the creation of congenial relations among people (which includes healthy relationship between husbands and wives, parents and children, and also between the wealthy and the poor). It inculcates the rights of neighbors, the rights and obligations of kin, and also the privileged (disabled).

In in his last sermon held during the last pilgrimage (Hajj), the Holy Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) said to his followers that he was leaving behind a book which will guide them till the day of the resurrection. Today, after a span of 14 centuries, we find answers to the questions which arise in our minds relating to science, modern technology, various health problems, and we may even find clues as to the political affairs we face.

Contents of Quran

Quran contains a set of moral and judicial injunctions which regulate the terms of anyone’s conduct. Quran contains directives for the people in power as well as for those considered “common” individuals. Quran speaks of finance, politics, administration, and many more. Take, for example, the following verses from Quran, which are cited to reflect the sublime morality and legal perceptions of Quran:

“And kill not your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Surely the killing of them is a great wrong.” (Surah Bani Israel)

“Those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans; eat up a fire into their bodies” (4:10)

Recitation of Quran -- A blessing of God (Allah)

Quran literally means “recitation” or reading. Recitation of Quran is the best remembrance of Allah Almighty in the daily lives of the Muslims. It carries great spiritual rewards. The Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him) once stated;

“Anyone who reads one letter of Quran, there is ten times the reward.”
The Holy Quran further states ,
“When the Quran is read, listen to it with attention, and hold your peace: That ye may receive mercy.” (7:204)
It is the duty of a Muslim that he must read Quran, understand its meanings, follow its injunctions and propagate the teachings of this blessed Book because regular recitation of Quran nourishes our souls. It is the remembrance of God (Allah) and a source of knowledge and also food for thought for the believers. Constant recitation of the Holy Book will be helpful in solving many problems and opens new avenues of thought for our minds. Recitation of Quran should be done with a melodious voice (as it is the human instinct that we like music and melody). This is why the Prophet of God (Allah) stressed the recitation of Quran with melody and fondness. He said :
“Beautify the Quran with your voices.”
