Lesson 3: Developing a Backyard Habitat Action Plan

In Lesson Three you will build on the information learned in Lessons One and Two and apply this knowledge. You have been thinking about the types of birds you would like to attract and the types of habitat components that you would like to add to your backyard.

Applying What You Have Learned

It is now time to refer to Chapter 2 (Attracting Birds) on page 24, Chapter 3 (Bird Profiles) on page 60 and Chapter 5 (Regional Guide to Plants and Birds) on page 266 in our textbook, The Audubon Backyard Birdwatcher, and to the web sites linked to this course, to assemble your ideas into a Backyard Habitat Action Plan.

Please review the descriptive text below for a step-by-step process for developing your plan. A companion Sample Backyard Habitat Action Plan is also included for your review.

After you have studied these materials, you are ready to “fill in the blanks” on the Backyard Habitat Action Plan form that is included in this lesson. You may also want to draw sketches of existing or future backyard habitat components.

In Lesson Four you will learn about maintaining your backyard habitat, how to build on your new knowledge of backyard birds and how to transfer your skills to community projects.
