College Strategies

Lesson 2: The Search for Food and Comfort: Making Friends

Assignment

- Find out which clubs and/or student groups exist at your university. Drop them an email asking what they are about and how you can join.

- Look beyond the obvious; do you love to write but you actually never wrote for anything before; check with the college newspaper. They most likely welcome volunteer writers and you will be able to cover stories on campus. Same goes for passionate photographers. This is just an example; if you have a trainer’s certificate or you used to coach check out the possibilities at the gym. These are all ways to meet great people.

- Find out how much a meal plan would cost, and calculate the difference between that and doing groceries yourself. If cooking makes you want to roll over and die, then try to find out how the meal plan works (point system?) and what they generally serve. This is mostly relevant if you have dietary concerns (hallal, allergies and other special concerns are not always considered). If you do have special food requirements for whatever reason get in touch with your college to find out if there are ways for those to be accommodated. Usually there is a choice of foods and if you have specific allergies there is a good chance you can choose for something that will not cause you to be hospitalized. In any way you do want to let the person in charge know about these concerns.

- Find out if there are nice restaurants or diners in the neighborhood. Sometimes there are real hidden jewels that serve fantastic food.

- Some colleges have a convenience store on campus, check if yours is among those

- Sometimes colleges offer transportation to grocery stores if they do not have a meal plan, this is usually free. It’s good to find out if that is the case if you are going to a place without a meal plan.
