Irish-American History
Lesson 1: General Introduction to the Period .
'The Emigrants ‘
I put these words into the mouth of an Emigrant Girl.
Line of Shore
There’s music in the ocean
There’s music everywhere
The wind sets waves in motion
To the music in the air
You’d need the language of a Gaelgoir
A poet’s heart to understand
The sense of loss we feel as we set sail from Ireland
The hardship in the faces
Can be read between the lines
But the eyes still glint with gladness
As they hint of better times
And the lilting strains of Gaelic
With its links to days of yore
Will be lost in foreign accents
As we lose the line of shore
I would return to sights familiar
My mind ablaze , soul filled with dread
I do not know which is more painful
My awful loss or the years ahead
For those left there on the quayside
Our hearts break a little more
Eyes blinded now by sorrow
As we lose the line of shore
I’ve lost friends and companions
I am alone till death relieves
This pain of separation
My dear God , how my heart grieves
None left now to keep my memory
I hear their voices in the winds that roar
The night has come, the light is dying
I can no longer see the line of shore

The remainder of the course will develop the topics above and give the student a better understanding of the factors which acted on so many Irish to leave , the conditions that prevailed in Ireland , conditions on board the ships which helped them escape and their final entry into their New World .
