Who Travelled

In the main, it was the eldest son , who bore the burden of a dependent family at home. Having passed to the New World following his ‘American Wake’, he felt obligated to help support those left behind.

The phrase ‘Money from America’ is written indelibly into the Irish psyche.

One group, however, whose plight led me to write, were the young girls, 14/15 year olds, who were another mouth to feed at home , but who could not provide enough income to support themselves. They were sent into virtual slavery in America and Australia.
