Lesson 3: Excel 2000 (Part 1)
Opening Excel and Parts of the Screen
Let’s begin using Excel 2000.
To open Excel 2000:
- Click on Start – Programs – Microsoft Excel

Let’s look at the parts of the Microsoft Excel screen (see Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows: Visual QuickStart Guide pp. 118-119 or click on the link below):

- Title Bar - displays the name of the workbook you are currently using
- Menu Bar - menu begins with the word File and continues with the following: Edit, View, Insert, Format, Tools, Data, Window, and Help. Click on a menu option to see a list of commands
- Toolbar - provides shortcuts to frequently used menu commands
- Worksheet - each worksheet contains columns and rows. The columns are lettered A to IV; the rows are numbered 1 to 65536. The combination of column letters and row numbers makes up a cell address
- Formula Bar - the left side of the Formula bar displays the current cell address. The right side of the Formula bar displays cell entries
- Status Bar – indicates current status such as Ready, NUM (indicating numeric keypad is switched on), Scroll Lock, End
Take a few minutes now to become familiar with these features and locate them on Microsoft Excel as it is displayed on your screen.
