Lesson 1: Word 2000 (Part 1)
Parts of the Word Screen
Let’s look at the parts of the Microsoft Word screen (see Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows: Visual QuickStart Guide pp. 36-37 or click on the link below):

- Title bar - displays the document name
- Menu bar - click on a menu option to see a list of commands
- Standard toolbar - frequently used menu options
- Formatting toolbar - displays formatting commands
- Ruler - shows page width and position of tabs, indents and columns
- End-of-file marker - horizontal line indicating end of the current document
- Tab alignment button - click to select a tab and tab type
- Outline view button - displays document in outline form
- Print Layout view button - displays document as it will be printed
- Web layout view button - displays document as it will appear if posted online
- Normal view button - displays document in standard view
- Status bar - shows the current page number and position of the insertion point in the document
- Mode indicators - shows special conditions such as typeover mode
- Office Assistant - quick help when you need it
- Scroll bars - allow you to move up and down or across the document
If you do not see the Standard, Formatting or Drawing toolbars on your screen:
- Click on the Menu option View - Toolbars
- Click on Standard, Formatting and Drawing
Take a few minutes now to become familiar with these features and locate them on Microsoft Word as it is displayed on your screen. When you have finished reviewing these features, go on to the next page.
