Poker: Texas Hold'em

Lesson 2: Hand Selection

The River

If you have been playing properly, you will not see the river card unless you have a strong hand. Once the river card is turned over, you know exactly what hand you have.

If you were trying to draw a hand, you know whether or not you were successful. If you do not make your hand, fold it. Don’t continue to throw good money after bad by continuing to bet.

You should bet your hand if you are the first to act. If you bet and the other players fold then they more than likely would have just checked if you had checked and stayed in the hand. Your strategy throughout the hand should be to force out as many players as possible.

When you get to the river, there are two mistakes you can make:

  1. One is to call a losing bet which will cost you the price of a bet.

  2. The other is to fold your hand which will cost you all of the money in the pot.

If there is a slight chance that you may have the winning hand, you should call.
