Poker: Texas Hold'emLesson 2: Hand SelectionThe Turn
If you think you have the best hand after seeing the turn card, go ahead and bet. Many players attempt to “check-raise” in this position. If the other players also check, you may lose a bet or two because you did not bet at the start of the hand. Check-Raise is when a player first checks with the intention of raising later in the round after another player bets. In low limit games, it is best to bet out of the gate as there are plenty of players who will call you.
If you check and the rest of the players check, you are giving them a free card, the river, to possibly beat you with. If another player raises you on the turn, and you hold only one pair, you are more than likely beaten and should fold.
