Caring for Mares & Foals

Lesson 7: Imprinting

Cautions

Imprinting is a controversial issue because some people believe that imprinted foals are too familiar with people; that they don’t respect their handlers or the handler’s space. You can avoid these problems if you keep your goals in mind. You are not trying to make a pet, but a trainable horse. Dr. Robert Miller, considered to be the author and authority on imprinting, actually begins his process by keeping the foal on the ground, not allow it to rise, thus imprinting his dominance over the foal. Whatever you do, make sure your foal is not in charge. Try not to let it get away from you and if that happens, resume your work. Don’t ever leave with the foal having “won” its way.
