Caring for Mares & Foals

Lesson 6: Caring For the Newborn Foal

Vaccinations

Primarily the only vaccination your foal needs at this point is a tetanus antitoxin. Any other vaccine may only interfere with the antibodies in the mare’s colostrum. Of course, follow your vet’s recommendation over anything in this course. The injection should be given in the rump (gluteal) muscle, never the neck, and is easiest to give while the foal is lying down for a nap.
