Caring for Mares & Foals

Lesson 5: Dystocia: Foaling Problems

Summary

While I have explained briefly the problems that can occur, most foals are born with little or no assistance. It is not my desire to frighten you but to educate you on the importance of being there, and knowing what you can do, and when you need to make a timely call to the vet. The goal has always been to a have a new healthy foal. I can’t stress enough that if there is any problem or question about the birth, CALL THE VET QUICKLY!

I know this has been a sobering lesson and the encouragement I can give you is that such problems happen infrequently and by understanding the situation you have the best chance of a successful birth even if there is a problem.
