Caring for Mares & Foals

Lesson 4: Foaling

Introduction

You’ve timed it right and have gotten the marvelous chance to watch your dream horse enter the world. But how do you know if things are going right? What should you do? What is too much and what is too little? When can you step in and lend a hand? Well, don’t let your excitement carry you away. However, foaling is a delicate process and must be completed in a timely manner for the health and welfare of the mare and foal.

This lesson we will cover the four stages of labor and what should occur during a normal delivery. Each step will be described and your part explained. By the end of the lesson you should be familiar with the procedure so you will be able to tell quickly if things are not progressing normally.
