Caring for Mares & Foals

Lesson 2: Caring for the Broodmare

Worming

The safest time to worm your mare is about seventy-five days after she has been breed. Up to this point the embryo has not implanted into the wall to the uterus and could easily be aborted. Make sure you use a product labeled safe for pregnant mares. Studies have shown that it is very important to worm her again within twelve hours of foaling, with ivermectin. This covers her and her newborn foal. I have also found no determent to worm after a hard frost to rid the mare of bots. Make sure that you have removed visible bot eggs before worming, so the horse does not immediately reinfest itself.
