Caring for Mares & Foals

Lesson 1: Getting Started

Conclusion

As I’ve explained the ins and outs of deciding to breed your mare, I have not desired to overwhelm you with information, but to help you realistically see what is entailed and how to begin researching your options. Breeding a mare and raising a foal is a tremendous undertaking and responsibility. It should be attempted only with your eyes wide open to the difficulties.

However, if you persist, your joy in your horse will be magnified by the fact that he/she began as a twinkle in your eye and who he or she becomes, is the result of your time, effort, training, and diligence. The relationship you will have will make your riding time more enjoyable, for if you have done your work correctly, there will be a trust and willingness to please on his/her part, and a true caring and understanding of his/her nature on yours.
