Lesson 2: Traveling with Toddlers

Accommodation choices for your toddler are not much different than for your baby. You may find a kitchenette, microwave, or mini-refrigerator even more useful for cooking your little one's favorite meal or storing snacks. Again, laundry facilities might be an important asset to ensure clean, dry clothing for your active, potty training little one.

Another useful addition is a bathtub. Toddlers that have never used a shower before often become extremely upset when showering for the first few times. Nothing is more trying than attempting to wash a slippery, screaming child. Alternately, you may want to give your little one a sponge bath instead of a shower.

Try to keep your toddler's bedtime routines as close as possible to his or her regular schedule. If your little one usually has a bedtime story before bed, make sure you continue the ritual while on vacation. If your toddler requires a night light, bring one with you. Keeping as close as possible to your normal schedule, will relax your little one making them more likely to sleep in a strange new place.

When choosing a motel room, you may want a room on the ground floor. In this way, when your little one wants to walk out to the car, he or she won't fall down the steps. Just remember to keep the door shut so your toddler doesn't disappear out the door while your back is turned.

If you are camping, try to get a site near the bathrooms. This allows quick and easy access. It is extremely important that your toddler remain dry and warm while camping to reduce misery.
