Lesson 7: The Virtual Classroom, Part One

Virtual Tools: A Teacher's Aid

A Note About Creativity

As a teacher, we're constantly asked to flex the creative muscle; when extending our classroom onto the Internet, we're definitely going to have to use that creativity. Keep in mind that there are, literally, far too many sources of information and tools to be listed here. Your best bet is to draw on what inspires you from this section and then extend on it- decide what, exactly, you want to offer and then search for that specific piece. I guarantee, there is at least one of every thing we can possibly imagine... and then a ton of things we never would imagine. What is offered here is just what the title says... and aid. It's a starting point, not the definitive source.

Beginning Easy- What's "Out There"

As in everything we've done throughout this course, we're going to start our final project by taking a look at what classroom websites are out there, online already. Take notes as you go through the list- specifically, what pieces do you love? What pieces do you hate? If you have a middle-ground opinion, it's not likely to be something you'll happily update. Only note extraordinary reactions, and if you find a resource listed that you know you'd love to use, by all means, write it down. You can also use the Website Evaluation form found here for further dissection and study.

Ready-to-use Aids

As I mentioned earlier, in creating our websites we will be using a lot of creativity, and coming up with ideas that may not be thought of as "school-specific". However, in this section, we're going to cover the ones that are- and for the most part, these are ready-to-use, meaning that you can put up the link, save a copy for linking to, or paste in the script and be off (and don't worry, we're going to cover all the processes soon enough.)

Once again, all links will open in a new window. Close the new window to return here.

Creative Aids

Alright, so here we go. The aids listed here were not created specifically for educators- but their addition to a classroom website can be invaluable. Take it or leave it, some things are better left to speak for themselves. All of these aids are scripts (all of them are java scripts, if that means anything to you yet)- meaning that they will run FROM your website, not from someone else's web page, adding value to your site as a whole.
