Lesson 3: Instructional Design, Part One

Assessment and Adaptation

Assessing What You Like

It's far too easy to find a lesson plan that you like, and want to start with. What can be more difficult is the assessment of that lesson plan - is it appropriate for your class? Does it meet strong criteria- and what criteria should it meet?

Let's take it a step at a time. Grab a lesson plan that you like from Teachers.net. Print the lesson plan out, so that you can easily view and assess every portion of the plan.

Now, grab the Individualized Lesson Plan Scoring Rubric here. This rubric will guide you through each of the criteria that should be met by a good lesson plan, with a minimum requirement of 59 points. (Don't stress too much on terms and criteria that you're not completely familiar with yet - by the end of this week, you will be.) (see source 2)

Adapting What You Choose

The Individualized Lesson Plan Scoring Rubric will also give you the suggestions you need to make the lesson plan you choose more appropriate and complete, so that it will meet the minimum criteria it needs to. Spend some time (about 20 minutes) adding in the pieces that are missing and/or modifying those which aren't quite right. You will be adding to this adapted plan in the next section of this lesson.
