Lesson 1: Travel Planning

Using Your Imagination and Creativity

The next set of pertinent questions I call the Imagination Questions. The answers to these questions will tailor your trip to your personal preferences and interests. Whereas you probably got a knot of anxiety in your stomach answering the Restriction Questions, the Imagination Questions will make you feel more at ease and in control of your vacation. These questions are all about your wants and desires. Imagination Questions include not only the basics (preferred accommodation, food, and transportation types) but also preferred activity types (family fun; sports and the great outdoors; arts and culture, and cruises and resorts.

It is important to remember that this process should be the imaginative, creative, fun part of travel planning. Therefore, as much as possible, try to put your previous Restriction Question answers away in the back of your mind. I realize this is difficult, but try. Imagination and creative thought are never a waste of time. Even though it may not seem rational or reasonable to want to eat at a five star restaurant or visit the Pyramids when you are planning for a camping trip, jot these ideas down anyway. Perhaps a special side trip can be made to visit a nice restaurant during your camping trip. Alternately, you might plan a future trip to Egypt to see the Pyramids.

If you are planning to travel with others, answer the Imagination Questions for each person. This does not mean that you have to please everyone all of the time. Sorry, this just won’t happen. Furthermore, just because your spouse and children enjoy monster trucks doesn’t mean you need to endure three weeks of monster truck rallies. Perhaps compromises can be made. Maybe an afternoon at a monster truck rally can follow a tour of a local flower display. Maybe the kids will behave during a shopping trip to the fleamarket for Grandma if you promise the kids a trip to an amusement park while Grandma has her nap. You never know!
