Nanny 101

Lesson 4: On the Job

Working as a nanny is extremely rewarding. Nannies participate in raising children, receive instant gratification and love, and become an indispensable member of the family team. Your work as a nanny will prepare you for many other experiences after you leave because you will be knowledgeable in multitasking, time management, and interpersonal communication.

However, being a nanny is not always positive. You will face difficult situations and challenging events that will test your ability to effectively do your job. Preparing yourself for challenges is helpful in all settings. While you cannot predict the challenges you may face, you can learn how to handle difficulties so you are better prepared.

Asserting Yourself as a Parental Figure

From your first day with a family until your last, you are expected to be a mature guardian for the children. This requires you to independently oversee the safety and happiness of kids who are not your own. Not only do you have to make sure you are doing a good job for the children’s sake, but you also have to answer to the parents.

Being the parent when you are not the parent is a hard thing to accomplish. There will be times when you feel like you are not being listened to. The best thing you can do to reinforce your role as a parental figure is to have the parents do the same. This means not just telling the kids you are in charge but also following through. If you have to discipline the children you need the parents to reinforce this by following your lead and holding the kids to what you tell them.

Being a parental figure is not just about disciplining. It is also about providing guidance, giving care, and looking out for the wellbeing of the children. The nanny is like a stand-in for the parents when they cannot be around. Take your role seriously because it is serious. You are helping to raise someone else’s kids.
