Christian Parenting 101

Lesson 5: How does a single Parent set up a Christian Household?

Victory through Godly Fellowship

Single parents have many needs; yet so do their children. It would be easy for a single parent to claim to be too busy to attend church, but the opposite is the case: you are too busy not to! Here are some things that a single parent will find within an active, God-centered fellowship:

  • A social outlet, many times exclusively for single parents
While single parents may feel isolated in congregations with only married couples, or where they may feel out of place with only single folks, a third group is beginning to crystallize in many a church: the single parents’ ministry. These groups build a level of social confidence for single parent families, tailored to the specific need of this group.
  • A number of activities for single parents and their children
The sons of single moms sometimes lack a positive male role model in their lives. Many a “Big Brother” program has been created that matches godly men with such boys. This will allow the fatherless boys to have a male confidante for the things they might not want to discuss with mom. Additionally, single mothers and these “Big Brothers” can tag-team and help a young boy overcome a lot of obstacles through constant communication with each other (1).
  • Adopt-a-family programs
More often than not, godly married couples may be a blessing to a single parent family by providing much needed support (emotional and spiritual), encouragement, babysitting, as well as accountability. (2) These opportunities may be found during family dinners, barbecues, or picnics. While this is important for the single parent, it is vital for the children of single parents. These times give them a chance to see a working intact marriage, and will give them hope for their own future, as well as training on how to function within such a relationship. While this nurturing will pay off in the distant future when the single parent’s child may wish to get married, it may also come into play a lot sooner, should the single parent find another Christian s/he wishes to marry.
