Lesson 4: Which Methods of Discipline are right, which are wrong?
Discipline by the Book
One book of the Bible that is packed with practical parenting advice is the book of Proverbs. Here is a list that is helpful for memorizing (both for the parent and the child) and for teaching a child:
- Proverbs 10:1 -- "A wise child brings joy to a father; a foolish child brings grief to a mother."
- Proverbs 10:17 -- "People who accept correction are on the pathway to life, but those who ignore it will lead others astray."
- Proverbs 11:14 -- "Without wise leadership, a nation falls; with many counselors, there is safety."
- Proverbs 13:1 -- "A wise child accepts a parent's discipline; a young mocker refuses to listen."
- Proverbs 13:24 -- "If you refuse to discipline your children, it proves you don't love them; if you love your children, you will be prompt to discipline them."
- Proverbs 15:1 -- "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger."
- Proverbs 15:5 -- "Only a fool despises a parent's discipline; whoever learns from correction is wise."
- Proverbs 15:14 -- "A wise person is hungry for truth, while the fool feeds on folly."
- Proverbs 15:17 -- "Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred."
- Proverbs 15:20 -- "Sensible children bring joy to their father; foolish children despise their mother."
- Proverbs 17:1 -- "Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting with strife."
- Proverbs 17:6 -- "Children's children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children."
- Proverbs 17:21 -- "It is painful to be the parent of a fool; there is no joy for the father of a rebel."
- Proverbs 17:25 -- "A foolish child brings grief to a father and bitterness to a mother."
- Proverbs 19:13 -- "A foolish child is a calamity to a father; a nagging wife annoys like a constant dripping."
- Proverbs 19:18 -- "Discipline your children while there is hope. If you don't, you will ruin their lives."
- Proverbs 19:20 -- "Get all the advice and instruction you can, and be wise the rest of your life."
- Proverbs 19:26 -- "Children who mistreat their father or chase away their mother are a public disgrace and an embarrassment."
- Proverbs 10:11 -- "Even children are known by the way they act, whether their conduct is pure and right."
- Proverbs 20:20 -- "If you curse your father or mother, the lamp of your life will be snuffed out."
- Proverbs 22:6 -- "Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain upon it."
- Proverbs 22:15 -- "A youngster's heart is filled with foolishness, but discipline will drive it away."
- Proverbs 23:13,14 -- "Don't fail to correct your children. They won't die if you spank them. Physical discipline may well save them from death."
- Proverbs 24:3 -- "A house is built by wisdom and becomes strong through good sense."
- Proverbs 29:15 -- "To discipline and reprimand a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child."
- Proverbs 29:17 -- "Discipline your children, and they will give you happiness and peace of mind."
- Proverbs 19:18 -- "When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild. But whoever obeys the law is happy."
- Proverbs 29:21 -- "A servant who is pampered from childhood will later become a rebel."
- Proverbs 30:11-13 -- "Some people curse their father and do not thank their mother. They feel pure, but they are filthy and unwashed. They are proud beyond description and disdainful."
- Proverbs 30:17 -- "The eye that mocks a father, that scorns obedience to a mother, will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley, will be eaten by the vultures."
