Lesson 1: An Ounce of Prevention

Your Puppy's Personality

Some breeds of dogs are more suitable for certain jobs, or as companions, than others and some breeds have different tendencies than others yet, each puppy is an individual with a personality all his own. By understanding your puppy’s personality type you can better understand why he behaves in certain ways, and the best way for you to train him, play with him, and interact with him.

You can get an idea of your puppy’s personality type with the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test and the Canine Personality Profile, developed by Wendy and Joachim Volhard. The Volhards are accomplished dog trainers who have over 50 training titles to their credit and have been teaching pet owners their Motivational Method of training for 30 years. They have also authored many dog-training books, articles and videos. These tests are not foolproof but can give you a better idea of the personality of your puppy. The Puppy Aptitude Test may be more accurate if conducted in a roomy area by someone the puppy does not know.
