Lesson 4: Techniques and TipsPainting CleanupClean-up Latex paint is water-soluble, but it's wise not to wash your tools in the kitchen or bathroom sink! It won't harm your pipes, but can splatter and dry on surfaces. Thoroughly scrape any wet paint from your brushes and rollers into the paint can before sealing up the can. Rinse them under running water until no more paint is visible, including between the bristles. Shake them outside and then blot with paper towels. You can now wrap them in plastic wrap or slip into clean sandwich bags, for the next day's work. Oil or alkyd paints must be removed using mineral spirits or turpentine. This must be done in a very well-ventilated room or outdoors! Thoroughly blot or wipe dry with paper towels and then discard the paper towels safely. Follow safety instructions on the containers for more information. Using different techniques to mimic stucco, suede, leather and other finishes is called "faux painting." SuiteU offers a great course, Faux Painting, by Cheryl Lewis. And for a one-of-a-kind appeal, try stenciling around windows, door frames, cupboards and painted furniture. SuiteU's course, Stenciling 101, taught by Carol Wallace, will get you started! |
