Lesson 6: Adding the Personal TouchTrash to TreasuresYes, we are all getting a little tired of that phrase, but it describes perfectly the hottest trend in decorating, from Beverly Hills to Manhattan, and all the modest homes in between. Take a look around your own house, garden and garage to find those tired tables, worn chairs, dinged bookshelves, and faded curtains. Perhaps Grandma's rocker is in the attic, or Dad's favorite manual typewriter stand is sitting in the basement store room. Why not freshen some of these things with a new coat of paint, refinished wood, or dipping in some Rit dye? There are dozens of books on the market, TV shows dedicated to the trend, and countless web sites which feature turning cast-offs into charming (and unique) decorating gems. This one, Twice Loved Treasures, has several fun projects to give you ideas. Our own SuiteU course, Trash to Treasures, will provide simple projects for you to learn basic techniques. HGTV's Trash to Treasures, a special program, featured several creative makeovers which are detailed at its web site. This old chest of drawers had a hideous pine finish, was missing some knobs, and had been badly scratched in its previous life. I painted it the same color as the guest bedroom's walls, added glass knobs, and voila! I accessorized it with a ceramic pitcher holding silk flowers, a 1940's framed print, and some toiletries I had brought home from a hotel stay.
