Getting FitLesson 4: Putting It All Together: The Secret Key to SuccessMeditating for ChangeMindfulness, or meditation, can help you achieve peacefulness, inner strength, and commitment to becoming fit. It can help us live in harmony with our world and ourselves. Many people, however, can find numerous excuses not to meditate...not enough time, have to clean the house, too much work, surroundings are too loud. All that you need to meditate, however, are a few minutes (around ten) and a quiet spot. The place that you choose doesn't have to be fancy or decorated in a certain way. You might find that the only quiet spot you know of is in the bathroom or in your car on your lunch break (I don't recommend meditating while driving.) Find a position that is comfortable. Sitting with your legs crossed is a popular way to meditate but not the only way. You need to choose what feels best to you. The ability to feel relaxed can also be enhanced by wearing soft, warm clothing but this isn't a requirement. After discovering your spot, clear your mind of all thoughts. Focus on your breathing and just try to "be". Some call this being in the moment. Whatever you'd like to label it, concentrate on living in the present without thoughts of anything at all. Remain this way, focusing on your breathing, for several minutes until you feel completely relaxed and peaceful. Now, with calmness surrounding you, concentrate on a previously decided mantra such as "I want to commit to a lifestyle makeover" or "I want to be fit". Continue to breathe while repeating your mantra over and over. The belief is that repetition and sincerity will help the thought become a part of your normal thinking patterns. Before moving on to the next section, take a few moments to write down at least five mantras of positive thoughts that you would like to see become part of your life. |
