Houseplants Under Lights

Lesson 2: Houseplant Containers & Potting Media

Lesson 2 Assignments

Look at your houseplant. Is it intended to grow upright as a small bushy plant? Does it grow as a tall tree-like plant? Does it hang down the sides of the present container (like a vine)? What size is your plant? Remember, never over-pot a plant or you will quickly rot it. Also remember, a large plant may need a heavy pot to keep it from tipping over.

Where do you intend to grow it? Will it sit on a windowsill? Will it be under plant lights where appearance isn’t a key factor? Do you want to use it to decorate a coffee table or end table? Is it so big the pot needs to sit on the floor? Will it be used as a room divider?

Would constructing your own planter be the best choice to meet your needs?

Complete the following exercise after asking yourself the above questions.

Look around your house. Can you find some potential planters? If not, take a trip to almost any department store. Look in departments such as storage containers, gardening or houseplants, or kitchenware. Select the planter you wish to use for your houseplant.
