Lesson 2: Influence of Surroundings On Nutrition

“We live in a land of vanishing beauty, of increasing ugliness, of shrinking open space, and of an overall environment that is diminished daily by pollution and noise and blight.” – Steward L. Udall (1920- )

The Damage Caused By Chemicals

Lets’ list some of the common uses of chemicals...

  1. Aerosols and sprays
  2. Insecticides and pesticides
  3. Food preservatives
  4. Cigarette smoking
We have hardly had any time to observe the effects of these chemicals on our bodies.

The use of chemicals such as insecticides and pesticides pollute the natural earth. These in turn harm our bodies through environmental interaction. Some of the chemicals are known for triggering the cancer genes in our body and some of the chemicals are also known for weakening the immune system. Many people suffer from food allergies, which is due the accidental contamination such as fertilizers and insecticides in our food.

Industries are held mainly responsible for this. Any kind of pollution is toxic to the environment and any kind of toxicity caused to the environment affects the living beings to a great extent. Hence, natural ways of living should be adopted. Growing some natural plants in your backyard is a good idea. Make the maximum use of nature as much as possible. Avoid buying foods that are sprayed with chemicals. We are already facing too many global problems such as global warming and hole in the ozone layer. Let Mother Nature remain the way it is and let’s make every possible use of nature and the surroundings around us. Since the ancient times, Mother Nature has nurtured us and I would say that we should continue to let her nurture us. She knows what is best for us.

Let’s not forget that using the chemicals on food can also lead to food poisoning. When there are so many harms, why should we opt for it? By purchasing these additives and chemicals, you are subtracting days and months or probably even a year from your life. Healthy living is the only key to happiness. Man has made significant discoveries in both science and technology but till now, many of us are unaware about the food that we buy from the stores, especially groceries, which are sprayed continuously day-to-day, are slow toxic substances. Thousands and millions of Americans and people all over the world invest over a billion dollars in chemicals and fertilizers. Only half the amount is needed for Mother Nature to restore itself. I had always wondered why and how people used to survive for more than 100 years without any dependence on man-made medicine or chemicals. The secret is revealed now... They made Mother Nature their best friend and they earned what they deserved...
