Dog Training

Lesson 3: More Lessons and Polishing Skills

Coming When Called Outside.

If your dog is coming reliably, being outside may not be a big deal. The training, temperament of the dog and the breed all play a part in how trustworthy the dog will be out of doors. A Border Collie you raised from a pup and started training at 7 weeks of age is more likely to be reliable outside than the Siberian Husky that you adopted from the shelter as an adult.

If the dog is not reliable, use your long line and practice calling him when he is not paying attention to you or is distracted. You can give the line a sharp snap to get his attention but don't just drag him toward you. You want him to move on his own. Praise and reward lavishly. Remember, a dog that is happy about coming to you will be the one that comes reliably.

Once he's pretty perfect on the long line, let him drag it. The retractable leash is not good here. He'll be a little restrained just from the weight of the leash and you'll have something to grab if he doesn't come when you call.

If he's perfect on the long line you might want to test him in a safe area. If you don't feel confident that he will come when he is called, you may keep him on the long line. Remember that this can be a life or death issue so use your best judgement.
