Lesson 4: Homework Help on the Internet

Citing Sources

Whenever you are teaching students research and reference skills, you need to also teach them about the concept of plagiarism and to correctly cite sources. This is very important when dealing with print materials, but it is even more important when dealing with material gathered online.

In this day and age of copy and paste, "stealing" content online and passing it off as your own is so easy it is frightening. So, if you are going to allow your students to use online materials, you need to instruct them on how to properly cite this material as well.

Here are several great sites on the proper ways to have students cite Internet references.

Citing Internet Resources: http://www.classroom.com/community/conne... by Classroom Connect includes the formats for citing information gathered on the World Wide Web, via email, and also includes citing sources for online images, sounds, video clips and newsgroups.

Citation of Sources: http://www.yahooligans.com/tg/678.html

This Yahooligans site gives guidelines for students broken down by grade. Very helpful when teaching this important skill.

Citing Electronic Texts: http://www.wiu.edu/users/miwrite/wiu/cit...

This site has many links to reference sites for citing online resources.

Style Sheets for Citing Internet & Electronic Resources: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/... is a tutorial designed by the University of California at Berkeley. It is a bit technical, but there are sections on citing resources in text and citing online references.

So, whether your students are using print materials or online resources, they will now be able to properly give credit the source of the material.
