Lesson 1: The Homework Dilemma

Does the word homework make you shudder? Does it conjure up visions of crying children, angry parents and frustrated kids? Well, you're not alone. In this lesson we'll look at the reasons for homework and some ways to make the homework process easier on everyone.

Introduction

Welcome to Helping with Homework! I know you'll find many ideas here that you can use right away - in your classrooms and at home. Please feel free to use the suggested reference books. They are all great and have many useful ideas as well.

At the end of each lesson I've posed several questions related to the lesson material. These are provided for your own information, just to get you thinking about homework and how you feel about it.

Now, on to the course!

In lesson one, we'll take a look at the idea of homework and its "historical" place in education.

Long an area of contention between teachers and parents and students, we'll take a look at the benefits of homework and why teachers assign it. We'll see what one school is doing about the homework dilemma, and get you thinking about what you might do in your own school.

We'll also look at ways to get organized for homework, both at school and at home, and how to "solve" this dilemma that plagues us all.
