Soapmaking 101

Lesson 5: Soapmaking Instructions: Part One

Step Six: Additives

Additives are always added at trace. The saponification process has already begun in a significant way and the soap mixture is cooler. This means your additives are less likely to be affected by saponification and are more likely to retain the properties for which you selected them. Adding essential oils at trace ensures that these precious oils will not simply evaporate into the air. But beware, additives can accelerate trace, so you must be ready to immediately pour the soap into the molds after adding the additives and fragrances. Add any natural preservatives at trace also.

I add my calendular blossoms, grapefruit seed extract and essential oils.
