Soapmaking 101Lesson 5: Soapmaking Instructions: Part OneStep Two: Prepare the lye/water solutionCarefully measure out the required amount of lye directly into the pitcher designated for the lye. This pitcher should be dry as lye will immediately react with water. Measure your lye carefully—it makes all the difference! Cover and set aside. In the second pitcher, measure out the required amount of water. The water should be at room temperature and bottled or distilled water should be used. Do not use hot water. Cover. Remove the cover of the lye pitcher and carefully add the water to the lye. Avoid splashing. Never add the lye to the water. Sir carefully with your designated lye spoon to dissolve the lye into the water. Gently scrape any lye from the bottom of the pitcher and make sure all the lye fully dissolves. Cover and set aside. This lye/water solution can reach temperatures of up to 200°F! Set it in a safe place to cool, where it will not be disturbed or knocked over. In step 4, you will check the temperature of the lye and cool it to the temperature required in the recipe. Remember, don't lean into the lye fumes as they can burn your mouth and throat.
