Lesson 4: Permanent Positive Changes for a Lifetime

Making a Difference

"Be kind to each other. It is better to commit faults with gentleness than to work miracles with unkindness." -Mother Teresa

"Giving to others is truly the gift of life. When we extend our love and kindness to others it gives us a feeling of rejoice. Today let's celebrate the gift of giving. Let's start with smiling at everyone we meet or helping an older person with their groceries. Search deep into your soul, and bring out the love and caring you yearn to share, and extend your kindness to others." (Rainbow Wishes and Colorful Dreams: A self-discovery journal for mothers and daughters celebrating life - by Teresa Brouwer)

Life Lessons

Some people believe that things happen for a reason. We learn from our mistakes and live by our experiences. There comes a time to give back to the world. What we learn and gain in life becomes a gift to share with others.

Act of Kindness

Volunteering for non-profit organizations is a great way to help others. You will gain friendships, support, experiences, and learn a lot about your community. You will feel good about yourself and feel that there is a purpose in life. Especially, being in the abuse lifestyle some of us lead.

If you can, volunteer at a local shelter for the homeless children, battered shelters for women and children, Humane Society, and become a Mentor.

This may sound odd to some people, considering that some people might still be in an abusive situation, but it is amazing when you gain a positive attitude from giving to others.

We tend to focus on the negative when we are in a negative situation, and we stop and say, "I am the one who needs the help here," but when we focus and steer towards the positive; it gives us a self-esteem boost.

Check your local yellow pages and newspapers for local organizations.

Go to http://www.bigbrothersbigsisters.org/ to find a listing in your area.

Big Brother Big Sister is also great for children who are in an abusive lifestyle. Kids, too need a support system. This is a great organization for kids. Find out about registering your child in the Big Brother Big Sister Program and find a Big Brother/Sister for your child.
