Escaping AbuseLesson 3: Making The Break For GoodEducationI believe that we all want to go to college and pursue some kind of a career. I know that most of us have at least thought about the idea or dreamed about it. A lot of people believe that if they don't have the money, then they can't go. This isn't true. Financial aid is there for those in need. The best part, you don't have to pay them back. There are so many organizations that will help those who want to go to college. The best way to break the cycle of financial dependence is to become financially independent. To do this, we must get our own jobs and expand our skills. I was on social services when a social worker recommended college. I mentioned that I cannot afford college and she told me that financial aid would more than likely cover all expenses. They did! I went to college at the age of twenty-four: married to an abusive alcoholic, and I had three kids at the time. I worked five days a week during the day waitressing and went to school two nights a week. I received an academic scholarship and graduated with a two-year associate degree in liberal arts/law. It was the best thing I ever did." -Teresa Brouwer A lot of people worry about transportation, childcare, and financial issues. But with today's technology, we could learn right in the comfort of our own homes. We don't have to drive or send our kids to a day care center, and we don't have to worry about babysitting fees. Below is a list of websites that offer home studies and information: Check out your local colleges and high schools first. A lot of high schools provide classes for a GED and your local colleges may have some home studies. Also, adult education is always an option in which most adult education offers certificates and requires less time and money. Social Services: When a family is on social services, the person who wants to go to college will automatically receive full financial aid. Most colleges offer daycare centers in which financial aid and social services covers these fees, as well. Transportation is another incentive that financial aid and social services cover. There is always a way. Social workers want to see their clients succeed in life. If you are on social services/welfare, ask your social worker about college or a higher education and what steps are needed in order for you to apply.
