Porcelain Painting

Lesson 3: Lesson 3

Adorable Ami

Let's paint for pleasure!
Adorable Ami The innocent look of a child can be so beguiling. Ami is a child who can win your heart with one look of those large blue eyes. She has been my subject, painted in a number of mediums but the porcelain piece is one of my favourites.
This painting can also be adapted to a child of your choice.

I chose an oval porcelain tile to produce this painting.
As I mentioned before, the feature placement is most important, more especially to retain the childlike expression. It is imperative that the measurements be checked before applying the colours.
NOTE: Small girls are usually wider at the eyes and the jaw and the chin is rounder; this gives the feminine quality to the young face. Final Finish.

We commence:

  1. Sketch the features, either with Flesh Shadow or All pencil. Using the Open Medium we proceed:
  2. Paint the shadow areas with Flesh Shadow, developing the shape of the eyes, nose and mouth.
  3. Paint in the middle tones with Flesh N01; soften and blend as it meets the shadow. A silk wad my be used to soften (not too hard so as not to absorb too much paint.
  4. Ivory Flesh is blended into the lighter areas; highlights are wiped out with the silk wad.
  5. Paint the lips with Shiraz (this is a delicate deep pink tone and one of my favourites, you may substitute with Pompadour) and shade the cheeks.
  6. Blue is painted into the eye and Blue Black for the pupil, ( to draw attention to Ami's eyes I brought out strong catch lights using the wipe-out tool), wipe out the whites of the eye at this point.
  7. We paint the eyelashes with Brown and eyebrows. Paint this colour over the hair and wipe out the highlights.
  8. Blue is shaded into the collar and also the frock and with a fine wipe-out tool, cut back the frill of the collar. NOTE: check your features. FIRE 800C

  1. After sanding, wash Ivory Flesh over the entire face and neck. Wipe colour back from the eyes and wipe out the highlights from the face. A stippler brush or silk wad can be used.
  2. Deepen the shadow areas; particularly around the nose, mouth and chin area. Place Reflected Light down the shadow side of the face.
  3. Mix Flesh Shadow and Shiraz (or substitute) and paint in the dividing line of the lips, corners of the mouth and the nostrils. Deepen the lip colour with Shiraz, wipe out the highlights. Shiraz is painted into the corners of the eyes with a pin-point of colour.
  4. Paint eyebrows with fine strokes and Brown, darken the lashes.
  5. Background colour is painted in; take it right up to the outer edge of the hair.
  6. Deepen the hair colour where required and bring some tendrils into the background and onto the shoulder.
    Feeling happy? FIRE 800C

I hope you enjoyed this lesson. I am sure everyone has an 'Adorable Ami' to portray on porcelain.
