Lesson 1: Porcelain Painting Pleasure

Explore and Dissect Colours

WE EXPLORE AND DISSECT COLOUR

Colour has five qualities:

  1. HUE
  2. VALUE
  3. CHROMA
  4. TEMPERATURE
  5. TRANSPARENCY or OPACITY

HUE is colour: Permanent or fugitive and is the particular individuality of the colour. COLOUR is LIGHT- A surface that reflects colour will appear white or light. BLACK is the absence of light.

NOTE: a colour wheel is an essential accessory and I suggest you compile a colour wheel and refer to it often.

There are some colours that cannot be intermixed with porcelain paints, but we are fortunate that this art form is catered fo with a great selection of different hues of colours. When these are applied with the correct balance, satisfying works of art are the outcome.

VALUE:Is the degree of lightness or darkness of colour.

CHROMA: This is the degree of brilliance of the colour.

TEMPERATURE: Restful colours, those muted in tone. a porcelain painter achieved colour intensity by applying colour between each firing.

TRANSPARENCY or OPACITY: Colour tints produce transparency. Two or more colours mixed together are heavier in consistency and therefore loose transparency.

NOTE: Colour must be applied softly and translucent building up between firings to attain the depth of colour where porcelain painting is concerned. We are fortunate with this art form to have wonderful mineral colours that produce lustre effects and can make our decorative work even more attractive and creative.
