What does voice have to do with effective readings?
Acting Auditions 101Lesson 2: THE AUDITION.Resources Needed:
Please note: Books are recommended but not mandatory. In Lesson One, you began two daily activities which will reap dividends for you over time: daily relaxation techniques and daily voice strengthening exercises. Do them faithfully and they will bless your life with increased skill, confidence and focus. The purpose of Lesson Two is to help you gain increased knowledge and comfort with the audition process itself. You will be able to read the lesson material in addition to visiting a variety of websites. All along the way, you will have the opportunity to record your unique perspective and experiences in your Acting 101 notebook. Let’s get started! Give It Your All.There are many types of auditions: auditions for high school theater, community theater, church theater, summer stock theater, and even professional theater. In this lesson, we will discuss how to prepare for the auditions you might face. We will also discuss call-backs. One of the most embarrassing call-back experience I had was for a summer stock theater troupe. After spending hours at the audition in the morning, I waited all afternoon for the call that never came. Eventually, in great discouragement I dressed for a luau party that evening. Imagine my surprise when an hour into the party, my roommate runs up and shouts, “You got the call. They want you there immediately!” I looked down at my silly purple Hawaian outfit. “Dressed like this?” She said, “Run! They’re waiting for you. I told them you were all decked out in luau clothes and they don’t care. Go!” Needless to say, I did. I sure felt stupid walking into the callbacks looking like a walking pineapple. Two hours into it, I still felt stupid. But I got the part. And isn’t that what counts? Now you may never need to walk into an audition dressed like a silly pineapple, but you certainly can give the audition your all. I know I gave 150 % because I felt so stupid and knew I looked like a novice, dressed like that. I knew I had to “strut” in all the right ways. And again, I got the part. You need to do the same for all auditions, not just call-backs. Remain calm, cool, collected, focused. That is exactly what the relaxation and vocal exercises will help you to do. And now for Lesson Two, we will discuss further practical knowledge for successful auditions. |
