What does voice have to do with effective readings?
Acting Auditions 101Lesson 1: VOCAL PREPARATION: MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!Practical Knowledge Applied. The time for gaining that practical knowledge is now. Open your textbook, Make Your Voice Heard, to the Foreword on page nine. Please note: Books are recommended for this course, but not mandatory. This portion of the book is important. Why? Because you need to understand the quality of Chuck Jones and his work. Maybe you have heard of Chuck Jones, maybe you haven’t. But the point is, he is a master at what he does. You need to trust him before you might be willing to give yourself over to his tutelage. Read the Foreword. Once you have read the Foreword, please record your thoughts in your notebook to the following question: If you were to meet Chuck Jones, what would be the one question you would ask? Now that you’ve recorded that, read pages eleven through sixteen. These pages will delineate his promises to you when you faithfully follow the program he sets out for you. Of all the things he lists on page eleven as rewards, which one means the most to you? In other words, which one do you need the most? Write down your response in the following manner: After three months of using Chuck Jones techniques, I will have become more _________________. To go through this process of writing down your expectations and thoughts is important because it will define your personal direction and help you map the process. This portion of Lesson One is entitled “Practical Knowledge and Discipline Begins Today.” Are you now ready to begin strengthening and clarifying your voice? Good. On page thirteen, Chuck lists his definition of voice training and how it differs from speech training. Does this matter to you? If so, how? Where do you fall short? Write down your responses. Why do you think Chuck mentions on page fourteen that “You cannot study voice passionately for a certain period and then stop”? A clue is in the very next sentence. Do you believe what he states? If so, why? If not, why? Please record your thoughts. One of the benefits of Chuck’s exercises is that he studied to make them fast-working and time-efficient, which is one of the reasons we're using his text for your exercises. So what stands between you and your eventual success? It definitely will not be his techniques. I’ve tried them and love the results. The answer basically is, “Perhaps . . . you.” You potentially stand between you and your eventual success. This brings us once again to the title of this section of our lesson: Practical Knowledge and Discipline Begins Today. To obtain the success you desire, you must follow the exercises Chuck shares with his book and you must follow them diligently. He will outline how to apply them in your daily life. By following through, you will learn to project successfully (both vocally and emotionally). Remember the baby learning to walk? Just as you eventually learned to walk successfully, so, too, will you eventually apply these techniques naturally and instinctively. It all starts with giving yourself Practical Knowledge through your gift of Discipline to yourself today! Let's get started on that "toddler walk!" READING ASSIGNMENT: Chapters 1 through 7. SUMMARY: After each chapter, take your time to write down the three most important points you gained from that particular chapter. RE-TEACH: After recording your thoughts from the chapters, find someone (your lucky roommate or friend) to teach these new concepts. For this knowledge will not be truly yours until you can successfully share it with someone else.
