Lesson 7: Developing Yourself as a Project Manager

Increase Your Knowledge

There are several great sources you should consult in order to further develop your understanding of project management. I'll name just a few of them here, but this is just a sample of what is available to you:

Suite101.com offers a great Project Management topic, written and edited and under the auspices of Jose Aniceto. Click http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/17106 to visit.

The Project Management Institute website at http://www.pmi.org offers very useful information for current and aspiring Project Managers, including an extensive database of education providers who offer instruction on a variety of topics in the field. The Project Management Institite also offers certification in the field (Project Management Professional and Project Management Associate), which might be something that you would be interested in pursuing. All of the certification information is available on the website.

Books, books, books. I have chosen three books to supplement this course, and you can find them by clicking on the Resource link above. There are LOTS AND LOTS of books on the subject, so I encourage you do enjor doing some research to find the publications that fit your needs. The books I have chosen for this course are, in my opinion, accessible and useful for new Project Managers. Of the three titles, the AMA Handbook of Project Management is the most advanced, and includes a focus on some project management issues that are beyond the scope of the new Project Manager. Don't let this intimidate you; rather, let it give you a sneak preview of just how interesting and developed the art and science of project management is today.
