Lesson 7: Editing And Reviews

Self editing

If you work alone, work as a contractor, or sometimes if you're in a small group there isn't anyone else available to edit your work so you have to do it yourself. Editing your own work is very difficult because you know what you're trying to say. You have extra context clues and background to fill in any blanks that might actually be in the writing so it's easy to miss mistakes or omissions.

If at all possible, leave some time between the completion of the writing and the beginning of your editing process. This gives your brain some time to forget exact word patterns and helps you catch more problems with the writing. If you can, it's best to work on another project in between the writing and editing steps.

Reading your work out loud can be a very effective self-editing tool. Your brain is less likely to fill in missing words if you're trying to vocalize them. Any awkwardness or odd pauses in the writing are also more apparent when read out loud.
