Lesson 3: Growing at the Speed of Light

East and West: the best of both worlds

Okay, this one's a no-brainer. If you are unsure where to put a plant, try a window that faces east or west.

Most plants are happiest when they receive the bright light that streams in from these exposures. Keep in mind that eastern sunlight tends to be cooler, and easier for plants to thrive in.

Western exposures can be too hot for some plants: check the lists on page 8 for plants that prefer "bright light but sunless" locations, versus those that require "some direct sunlight".

TIP: You can always supplement natural light from windows with artificial sources. Light cast from florescent sources is the kind plants like best. Compact florescent bulbs can even be screwed directly into any typical lamp socket, and has the added bonus of lowering household electric bills (they are MUCH more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs).
